Looking back on 2011

I saw a post on Studio Veena today that got me thinking about all of the things that I’ve accomplished this year.  Although I just wrote a progress update for the month of December, I thought I’d also take a look at everything I’ve learned since I started pole just over a year ago.

I started pole last September, but the majority of my progress occurred between January and the present.  When I first started, I attended a 10-week beginner choreography class that got me hooked on pole.  It wasn’t long into the session before I bought a pole so I could practice at home, and because of this I was able to learn several things on my own in addition to what we learned for the routine in class.  I ended up performing that routine for a studio video shoot, and that was the first time I danced in front of a group of people.  It was several months before I tried inverting.  I bought a pole mat right before the holidays last year, so that was the first time I felt comfortable learning to invert on my own.  Unfortunately, I was not able to bring the pole home during Christmas break – I don’t even think I told my parents about my new-found obsession until then, and I didn’t want to push my luck.  Thankfully they were supportive once I was able to dig up the most amazing videos I could find on YouTube showcasing the strength, beauty, and art of pole. Turning around a failure

I have exams this week and I have been beyond stressed lately, to the point where I’ve been driving myself crazy.  On top of everything, I haven’t been able to practice for a while because my pole broke and I’m waiting to receive a part from the company.  To relieve some stress, I decided to work a practice into my schedule yesterday at the studio.  My main goal for the day was to film a routine I had put together but had not been able to rehearse at home.  I wanted to be able to use the video as a submission for an upcoming showcase, and although I knew it probably wouldn’t be perfect, at least it would be a start.  At best, I hoped to run through the routine a couple times and film it just so I could go back and see what needed to be fixed; I would worry about perfecting it later.  In reality, things didn’t go so well.  (more…)

My first pole recital!

This weekend I performed in my first pole recital!  It was AWESOME.  Technically it wasn’t just a pole recital – there were other forms of dance too.  Some of the other acts featured exotic dance, lyra, spinning poi, and silks, and all of the performers choreographed their own routines.  The recital was Twilight themed, so our music came from the movie soundtracks.  My song was Satellite Heart by Anya Marina. Choreography: when you’re fresh out of ideas

It’s no secret that creating a routine can be tough.  You want to showcase your best moves, but if you’re like me you may have a few default moves or combos that you always fall back on because they’re comfortable.  If I don’t make a conscious effort to change it up, the moves I’ve been working on most recently tend to block out all of the other stuff I’ve learned, and my mind goes blank.  When this happens, it helps to have a backup.  Here’s a quick tip I use whenever I get stuck. My pole is my therapist

This summer has been very difficult for me in many ways. There’s a lot going on in my family right now, and every time I’ve gone home to visit I’ve received bad news. This weekend was especially traumatic, and the worst part is that I can’t talk about it with even my dearest friends because that would be violating my family’s privacy. However, it’s something I’m going to have to deal with for the next several months, and I know it’s going to weigh heavily on my heart.

I’m not going to pretend that when I pole dance all of my worries flutter away like carefree little butterflies.  But I can say that being able to go to class every week still gives me something to look forward to.  Nailing a move still gives me a rush of positivity.  Creating a routine still gives my brain something to do when I need to stop thinking about all of the things that are haunting me.
