December update

Here’s what I’ve been working on this month!

Splits:  Ugh.  I could blame final exams, schedule changes, hectic holiday traveling, preparations, festivities, and a million other things for my failure to keep up with this, but instead I’m just going to keep at it.  I’m not going to let a breakdown in my routine throw me off course.  And that’s that.

Back flexibility:  Still slowly improving bit by bit.  My cocoon is more consistent, my closed scorpio is looking better, and I’ve finally gotten my legs parallel to the ground in the crescent.  In fact, I’m so happy about my crescent that I thought I’d post some pictures of my progress! (more…)

My first lyra lesson!

Yesterday my friend (and pole buddy!) and I got the chance to take a private lyra lesson at our pole studio.  It was AWESOME.  We learned a couple different ways of inverting and getting into the hoop from the floor, and we learned several poses from there.  I’m not going to lie – with over a year of pole under my belt (and after having taken advanced classes for the past ~6 months), I did not think it would be very challenging.  I was wrong.  (more…)

Turning around a failure

I have exams this week and I have been beyond stressed lately, to the point where I’ve been driving myself crazy.  On top of everything, I haven’t been able to practice for a while because my pole broke and I’m waiting to receive a part from the company.  To relieve some stress, I decided to work a practice into my schedule yesterday at the studio.  My main goal for the day was to film a routine I had put together but had not been able to rehearse at home.  I wanted to be able to use the video as a submission for an upcoming showcase, and although I knew it probably wouldn’t be perfect, at least it would be a start.  At best, I hoped to run through the routine a couple times and film it just so I could go back and see what needed to be fixed; I would worry about perfecting it later.  In reality, things didn’t go so well.  (more…)

November update

Here’s an update on what I’ve been working on this month!

Splits:  Last month, I was really struggling to find the motivation to stretch.  This month, I’ve been stretching just about every other day or every couple days for the past couple weeks.  I’d love to get the splits by Christmas so that I can get a picture of me doing them in front to our Christmas tree, but we’ll see…Until then, check out my Splits Progress page!

Back flexibility:  This is slowly coming along.  I am now able to lower from a back bend into a forearm stand (without using the pole), which probably has less to do with an increase in flexibility than with an increase in confidence and comfort in the move (since I could already touch my toes to the floor when I was doing this move against a pole).  I am also continuing to practice transitioning into the cocoon more smoothly. Well that was fast…

About a month ago, I wrote a post called Changing the photo on your fridge.  In this post, I described how I had hung a photo of a move (an inside leg hang) to my fridge, forgotten about it, and then realized months later that I had nailed the move a long time ago!  Following this discovery, I decided to hang up a new photo to use as motivation.  The photo I ended up picking is a lovely one of Veena doing a jade.  (more…)

Staying hydrated

I have had a big problem staying hydrated lately, and consequently I’ve been getting the worst headaches.  It’s been so bad that I’ve started getting them every day, and I know they’re from dehydration because I get a different type of feeling than I do when I’ve been concentrating for too long or going through caffeine withdrawal.  And because I’ve stopped working out regularly (aside from pole class and practice at home a few times a week) I don’t remember to force myself to drink water; I don’t even think to keep a water bottle with me.  Well, after my muscles started cramping during pole class yesterday, I decided that I was going to start drinking more water.  And let me tell you, it’s not easy.  Then I remembered a trick I used to use when I went to the gym (I’m serious, I haven’t been to the gym in at least a year)… (more…)

October goals update

In September I wrote a post about goals I was working on that month.  Here’s an update!

I have been stretching for the splits, but I haven’t been doing it every day so I don’t feel like I’m getting very far.  That’s why you won’t find much under my Splits Progress page.  However, I DID improve my jade, which had more to do with settling into the move than increasing my flexibility – but still!  I’m happy!
